Leighton's Life- 1 Week Old

In just one week, Leighton has already changed so much. In fact, this morning was the very first time I noticed how much she has changed. However, it doesn't make me too emotional because I have been thoroughly enjoying every single minute with her. All anyone ever talks about is how fast this is going to go. I can honestly say I have tried not to take one second for granted. Here are all the highlights from the first 9 days of Leighton's life!

Likes:

Eating- Leighton is SUCH a good eater. They often worry about early babies not having a good latch/feeding habits but you don't have to worry about this girl. She eats every three hours on the dot and had a perfect latch from day one. She is exclusively on breast milk now, though she had to be supplemented with formula for a few days due to a tiny bit of jaundice.

Sleeping- Leighton sleeps soundly between every feeding. That is putting her sleeping at about 20 hours a day. She sleeps pretty well for me during the night, but I don't want to jinx anything so I won't blog brag. She has such a sweet disposition that she truly tries everything not to cry. She will try and re-position herself, try to suck on her hands/fingers (though I don't let her do this for long, only long enough for the "awww" factor then we remove them so she doesn't develop it as a habit), etc. She truly only cries if she is hungry or cold. Sweet, sweet girl.

Being Held- We have had so many visitors in the hospital and our home alike and she has been so spoiled by being held a lot!

Mommy's voice- She can definitely pick me out of a crowd by my voice. If she hears me talking she will sometimes open her eyes for just a second but she doesn't do this for any other person's voice. I guess all of that talking/singing to her in the womb really did make a difference. She especially likes for mommy to sing to her the times she does get fussy, this calms her down almost immediately.

Being wrapped up tightly in warm blankets!

Dislikes:

Being Cold/Wet/Hungry- I think this goes for babies in general. She will definitely let us know when she is experiencing any of these horrors. We were really worried how her first bath would go because most babies get too cold and scream the entire time. I was nervous about bath time because I was told she HATED her first bath in the nursery, though those nurses apparently weren't too gentle. However, she rocked her first bath at home, actually fell asleep!

Her Bassinet- This makes mommy a little sad as it is such a beautiful bassinet but she can't stand it. I can't figure out if it's just uncomfortable to her or if she just doesn't like being on her back. Maybe a combination of the two. The only place she can get a good night's sleep is being upright in her nap nanny. And hey, if that's what works and gets mommy some sleep, that's what we will do, for now. I am a BIG fan of sleeping.

Other:

She held her head up on her own at 2 days old, as well as found her hands/sucked her thumb. All the nurses marveled at how strong she was to be so early. Give her your finger and she will put a death grip on it, you won't be getting it back for a while. She has definitely got great muscle tone. She wants so badly to be independent (she is mommy made over in that respect) she already tries to hold her own bottle and paci and she already rolls from side to side. I bet it won't take too long for her to roll front to back or vice-versa.

She has already changed physically, her face has gotten fuller, I can tell she is gaining weight. She is going to be very tall, I believe. I guess she didn't have a choice but her fingers and toes are so long that I am sure she will surpass me one day.

She has a habit of stretching her toes back towards her legs, something my dad (her "Papa") has always done.

We had her newborn pictures done on Valentines Day- her first holiday. She did SO good with being positioned and re-positioned a million times. I was so proud of her. We cannot wait to see how they turned out!

Who does she look like?

Right now, everyone thinks she looks just like me. She certainly has my nose and face shape. I could kiss those sweet lips all.day.long.
